- Dr. French Rowe Fogle was born in Marietta, Ohio on February 28, 1912 to Charles E. and Emma O. Fogle. His hometown was in nearby St. Mary's, West Virginia and he graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1929. Dr. Fogle attended Marietta College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude with a B.A. degree in English in 1933. In 1958, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by Marietta College. Dr. Fogle received his M.A. (1938) and Ph.D. (1949) degrees from Columbia University, and attended the Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey from 1933-1934. He served in E Company of the 3rd Marines in the South Pacific, won a field commission in Samoa and was awarded the Silver Star medal for heroic action in Guam in 1944. He went from Private to Colonel during his years of service. After his term of service ended in 1945, he held a Rockefeller Fellowship for a year, taught at Barnard College, and worked on his Ph.D. He was an Emeritus Professor of History and English Literature at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. After his retirement in 1979, he served as a consultant to the Director of Honnold Library in Claremont. He had served on the editorial boards of The Huntington Library Quarterly, and the Journal of the History of Ideas. He was a member of the Renaissance English Text Society, Modern Language Association and the International Association of University Professors of English. He also served as president of the Renaissance Conference of Southern California, the Milton Society of America, and the Friends of the Huntington Library. A top Milton scholar, he made significant contributions to his field. In 1951, he became a member of the permanent research staff in the field of English Renaissance literature at the world renowned Huntington Library.
