A richly illustrated guide to British cultural history. This AA guide tells you where these treasures can be found. First published in 1968 this is still a quality reference book. An encyclopedia of places; a history of style; glossary of technical terms; maps, photographs and drawings and so much more.

This is one of those books that interested me in history, art and architecture so when I spotted a this in a second-hand book shop it was a must have. Obviously things will have changed in the show more intervening years but this is still a wonderful book to have if you are at all interested in social history and the crafts that created so many wonderful buildings and artworks. show less

A truly excellent book of walks covering an extensive area. From Kirby Lonsdale in the west to Thirsk in the east and Keld in the north to Halifax in the south.

Apart from the good descriptions and clear maps of the routes, what makes this book outstanding is the summary preceding each walk which contains the normal stuff (parking, gradient, difficulty) but includes vital information for dog walkers (dog friendliness and number of stiles)

My own explorations of Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales have largely been confined to the uplands. This book, whilst happily illustrating their worth, also showcases the many and varied delights of the lower lands, along with some of the wildlife and observing detail as well as grand panoramas. Good stuff!

It's not usual to read a phrasebook from cover to cover, but after booking our honeymoon I went out to buy one and then that's what I did. This one doesn't have quite the fabulous phrases I found in the BBC Portuguese one ("I'm sorry officer, I didn't know it was illegal" is something we could usefully learn in any language), but I think it will be helpful - although perhaps not so much the section on chatting someone up. I've now forgotten pretty much all of it, but I've a week left to show more brush up my skills :) I think it will be very handy while we're away.

Addendum: while it was helpful I did find that I felt very limited by my inability to string whole sentences together unless they were the exact ones in the book. And it frustrated me that I simply couldn't work out when it was appropriate to use "Prego" and when "Per favore". Still, we were a lot less hopeless than we would have been without it! show less
