I vividly remember listening to Alanis Morissette’s album, Jagged Little Pill, when I was in college. Her music was unique and empowering in the mid-90s. It felt like she was bravely breaking barriers for women with her honest lyrics. I enjoyed learning about some of the songs on that album through this Audible Original in which she openly talks about her early journey in the music industry and her personal growth.
I was immediately impressed that Alanis opened this Words + Music session by show more normalizing human emotions, especially anger. The use of music has been instrumental for her to process her own emotions. Throughout this audiobook, Alanis shares her insights into specific songs from the Jagged Little Pill album, like "You Oughta Know," "Ironic," "Thank U," and "Hand in My Pocket.” These songs are also performed acoustically, which makes for a really cool audiobook experience. I also loved how much her Canadian accent came through in her voice. Haha!
I admire her courage to defy what people expected of her early in her career. She talked about moving to Los Angeles and appreciating how she was encouraged to evolve and sing what she wanted. She also shared some personal stories about her trip to India, which really helped her develop as a person. She began meditating regularly because of that experience. Alanis seems like a really down-to-earth and interesting person. I would love it if she would write a full-length autobiography someday!
On my blog, I wrap-up my review with the official video for “Ironic.” I remember being a huge fan of this song and video when it first came out.
I have photos, videos, and additional information that I'm unable to include here. It can all be found on my blog, in the link below.

I have always loved Alanis Morissette's music but I didn't know anything about her. Now I do! Great listen from Audible and great narration/interview from the artist herself. Highly recommended.

It was a windfall this year getting to go to the 20th Anniversary concert for Alanis (as my first concert of hers) and getting to listen to this personal rendition of stories behind her songs, as well as live recordings of some of her very best.
