2893 1900: The Generation Before the Great War, by Edward R. Tannenbaum (read 3 Aug 1996) This is a 1976 book by an N.Y.U. professor. It is episodic and makes no pretense to chronological narration. The last chapter, called Revolution in the Arts, was the best chapter. It discusses the avant garde in the 1900's, including art, drama, and music. Georg Kaiser (who I don't recall ever hearing of) is called "the most outstanding of the Expressionist dramatists" with The Burghers of Calais as his show more "greatest drama." I'd like to read it, [but have not, even up to 2008]. There is also perceptive discussion of Kafka and Proust. This book was not what I expected and much of the earlier part was not of interest. show less

The golden age of the Titanic comes alive. These were thoroughly modern times. It would not be until the 60's that the western world would be so forward looking.
