Recounts in detail the intermittent but eventually systematic introduction of graven images by Roman rulers into Jewish communities - igniting Zionism. [179, 185]

While scholarly and comprehensive with such a rich tale in a single volume, it does contain show more significant omissions. No explanation for how Jewish communities suddenly appeared in the Caucuses and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages. No mention of the Khazars -- a warrior people of Turkish stock who were wedged between two major 8th century world powers: Charlemagne's Holy Roman Empire knights were advancing from the West, and Muslim armies were advancing from the Persian East.
