Still the definitive study, although published in 1978. Reed offers excellent coverage of the operations and superb analysis along with scintillating (and sometimes provocative) judgments on the commanders involved.

A good analytical book about the Peninsula, and North Carolina campaigns. Well researched, and making good use of the sources.

this is the thesis that gave birth tot he author's very good "Combined Operations of the Civil War". It was a pleasure to be possessed of the ancestor of that work.
