Scary children's book, mouth of truth, filling caves with bones in Name that Book (June 2011)
Reviews

Giving and getting in a surreal landscape.
Little Donkey is going to Jackie's birthday party! He picks out a wonderful red kite for a present....a really wonderful red kite....a perfect red kite....maybe Jackie would like something else? But Little Donkey's mother is firm and in the end both he and Jackie enjoy playing with the wonderful kite....and it will be Little Donkey's birthday soon!
I enjoyed the realism in the story - Little Donkey continues to long for the red kite even after he has show more given it and played with it together with Jackie. Happily, his mother doesn't immediately produce a kite for Little Donkey.
I'm a little puzzled by the pictures - They seem vaguely surreal, set in a desert-like landscape. I can't figure out if Little Donkey and his mother are wearing some sort of native dress or snazzy pajamas - either way they look comfortable!
Verdict: Interesting, but not outstanding.

A donkey mama comes home with a shopping bag and the youngsters are curious about what's inside!
This is a simple counting book for the youngest readers (either a read-aloud with infants, toddlers and/or preschoolers - OR - for beginners just learning to read to themselves).
However, I was disappointed with this book. The slight story just showcases bad behavior on the part of the "child" donkeys, which is then rewarded by the mother donkey. The illustrations are so basic that they are not show more appealing, especially with the strange-looking donkeys.
Not recommended. show less

No official reading information on this book so let's treat 1 2 3 LITTLE DONKEY as just a Counting Book.
A Counting book that I really like. To be honest I was a little surprised by the artwork. I mean the first image we get is of a momma donkey in large green and white striped full-length dress. The dress has a hood and covers her donkey ears so that only her face shows. The text that accompanies this page is:
1
shopping bag
Look what Mama's bought!
The next venue show more though told me that we have something special here.
2
nosy friends
What's inside?
There's a young donkey and a calf digging into Mama's bag.
The pages in this book are a nice slick and thick paper with a glossy finish. The paper is nice enough that I was able to clean off some smudgy fingerprints from this library book.
The material is present with number and text on one page and the accompanying art on the next. The numbers are large enough that you can take a small finger and help them to trace it. The items that are to be counted on the opposing page range in size from large to small. And I found all of them interesting.
SUMMARY
Fun and colorful book for toddlers and preschoolers. I liked the artwork and the fact that there's a story around which the counting is done. The youngsters want what Mama has put up and they have a little spill when they try to have their way. The book ends delightfully with 10 soft kisses. show less
