Have heard a great deal recently about sailors at last receiving much deserved medals for participation in Arctic Convoys during WWII. This book shows just how much those medals are deserved.
Thoroughly researched with an introductory section providing a very interesting background to the whole scenario, the author shows just how harrowing were the experiences for thousands of brave men and women (many Russian sailors were female!) Extracts from many journals and diaries highlight the show more suffering and the success of many brave souls. Some of the details are very moving, none more so than the young doctor who, realising that the lifeboat into which he had pulled a number of survivors needed to be lightened, simply stepped out of the boat and was never seen again.
Some truly remarkable exploits and achievements. show less

Enduring Freedom, Enduring Voices: US Operations in Afghanistan (General Military) by Michael G. Walling
A good collection of first-hand accounts and general chronology of the U.S. operation in Afghanistan. There's a lot of information, although at times it can be overwhelming. This book is an excellent choice for students writing about this subject. Get the print copy or the epub version, so you can appreciate all the maps.
