I don’t normally think of romance when I think of the Jungle Doctor books, but this one is a romance! It is beautiful. There is much more to the story than just romance, though. Jungle Doctor saved a couple of lives, and a major problem was solved by the death of a stubborn man, and Jungle Doctor found life lessons in many of the hospital’s every day happenings. We all loved this book, as we have loved the other books in the series.
We’re enjoying reading all the Jungle Doctor books we have on the shelf. This one was a bit more icky than most of the others we have read so far. There is a lot of opposition to the doctor and the hospital from one particular village and its chief, and a couple of people actually die in the story. At the same time, Jesus is triumphant. There is also humor; one scene and the four illustrations that go with it, is priceless. We were amazed at the ability displayed by a young blind man, and show more his compassion for the hurting around him. This is an amazing story! show less
We finished reading this book today. It was another wonderful tale of life in a mission station in Tanganyika. This time, the Jungle Doctor is facing an outbreak of meningitis. As usual, many colorful people parade through the book, there are tragedies, and triumphs, and humor all along the way. As with all the other books in this series, we loved reading this one.
It starts okay as an autobiography, but then becomes a selection of sometimes/sometimes not interesting topics. Interesting (not a criticism) that he managed to get a lot out of a relatively short stay in Africa. I missed more detail on his actual work in Africa, and the people there. I read his Jungle Doctor books when I was young. Would like to read one or two again as a result of reading this book.
