This is one of those books that at first you think you will not enjoy it at all. Now it's now and you wonder how it so quickly pulled you into caring about these characters. You wait for what you know is coming like watching a train wreck, yet little birds keep flying in to keep you distracted but interested. I have not read this style of writing before, which may be why I had to adjust to it. It was worth it. I will now seek out his other book needing a taste for more.
If you go into this book knowing it will be a dark, melancholic read, you will not be disappointed. While the story itself is far from upbeat, the writing is so very rich and vivid. For me, the descriptive took me to days right after Hurricane Katrina with some of the smells and sights on the Mississippi Coast and then took a left turn to where our minds always try to avoid. A unique look at possible events in a very human manner.
A haunting tale of several lives intertwined into one unbelievable story. Well told, suspenseful. Great character development. Will keep the reader up late into the evening to find out what happens next. Some subject matter may be disturbing to some readers.
