- Michael Townsend Smith is an American playwright, director, theater critic, and impresario. He served as the primary theater critic for The Village Voice during the 1960s, using his platform to champion avant-garde and Off-Off-Broadway movements. He directed early works at the Caffè Cino and produced landmark scripts by Maria Irene Fornes and Ronald Tavel. He later moved to the West Coast, founding Genesis West Theatre in Santa Barbara before relocating to Oregon.
