- Count Aleksey Tolstoy was a courtier who served the tsar as Master of Ceremonies, then as Grand Master of Royal Hunting. He also wrote fiction, ballads, and licentious and satirical verse. Tolstoy and three cousins all wrote satire under the pen name Kozma Prutkov. He left the court in 1861 to devote more time to poetry.
