- Tractarian novelist, born into a large middle class family on the Isle of Wight. Her parents died bankrupt, she felt obliged to pay their large debts and mother her younger siblings. Her novels became popular in 1840s. "Experience of Life" is semi-autobiographical. Started a girls school in 1866.
