At the height of Apartheid racial segregation politics pushed out all other social problems. Published in 1972, Shadow Game sets a mixed-race homosexual relationship in the midst of that turbulence and sees it destroyed. The secrecy surrounding the gay relationship between Ray and Victor is not unlike gay relationships in England of just a few decades before that, but the brutality of the authorities all the more. The novel describes some beautiful moments which end in a horrifying show more conclusion.

Shadow Game was originally published under the pseudonym Laurence Eben. This Penguin Modern Classics edition reprints it for the first time under the name of its author.
