Reviews
A very important work covering the history of Sumatra, or at least to the late 18th Century when it was initially released. The biggest interest for me was its historic value, including apparently the first English language use of the word "surf", a hindi word it seems for waves crashing on the shore. What people used to explain waves crashing on the shore previously I have no idea.
Accompanying the text there are some great sketches of Sumatran flora and fauna (fortunately not of the Great show more Rat of Sumatra), some of which sadly no longer exist, and with the glory of hindsight, we can note which 18th century statements seem odd today. show less
