A hilarious look at the forty years the Dutch ruled Manhattan – a biting satire yet wonderfully authentic in how it portrays Dutch culture, historical events and real people. The mevrouw – that’s a Dutch housewife – doesn’t hold her tongue for anything, whether she’s talking about greedy merchants, preachers, drunks, Indians, adulterers, Englishmen or her own child for that matter. You will never again see Peter Stuyvesant in the same light.
A good book for bringing history to life. It presents a good picture of raucous free-spirited New Amsterdam while also staying close to the history. The characters were believable and the writing good although early on I sometimes had trouble following the action scenes.
