Photographers need an extended knowledge of the history of art as it influences the history and practice of their medium. One of the fundamental concepts of painting and the visual arts before photography was the Picturesque. In photography this sometimes morphed into the Pictorial Style which often became maudlin and mundane. Yet the impulse for "rightness," beauty, and emotionally effective photography persists and is informed by such careful and comprehensive studies as this.
