- Field's first name is sometimes given as Nathaniel, especially in older reference works. However Nathan in this case is not a nickname for Nathaniel -- he was christened 'Nathan'. Although Field was the son of a bishop he was 'impressed' to be a child actor at 13. He became a protoge of Ben Jonson, and grew up to be one of the most dashing and highly regarded leading actors of his time. He joined the King's Men c1615, but died in his early 30s in 1619 or 1620. He was also a playwright, often working in collaboration with John Fletcher and/or Philip Massinger.
