In thirteen chapters, Stedman breaks down Job for the layman. He quotes extensively from the book and breaks down what happens, with some observations that put the oldest book in the Bible into context along with New Testament principles.

The reading is dry and the version of the Bible he quotes from harder to understand than mine. But I have a tough time reading poetry and even following a simple story, so I found it useful to read after reading the chapters and having him point out when one show more of Job's friends was quoting Job's earlier words, for example. The chapters on God's responses to Job alone are worth the price of admission. show less

This is not a profoundly scholarly work, however, Ray Stedman makes God's redemtive purpose come alive. He weaves each book of the Bible into an wonderful tapastry in which God' purpose, promise, judgement and grace are beautifully detailed. I highly recommend this book as one of the important books in the library of every Christian.
The book-by-book lecture series by Ray Stedman that closely follows this book is available free on the web at Blue Letter Bible Institute. A pdf transcript of show more those sermons is also available free. It is very very close to the content of this book. They are excellent as we have come to expect from the late and deeply loved Ray Stedman. show less
The best description of biblical Christianity out there today! This book formed the backbone of the Jesus Freak movement in the early 70s, and still today there's really nothing as concise, precise and biblically-anchored. Perhaps it's too short, but really that's the beauty of Stedman's work here. Highly recommended for young Christians and Christian leaders looking to break out of the Institutional Church mold.
An excellent and readable overview of the Scriptures. If you are new at studying the Bible - or even if you're an old hand at it - you will appreciate the engaging insight and explanations in this book. I recommend reading it while reading through your Bible in a year!
