I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I appreciated its freshness and intimacy. John Q. Barrett did a stellar job of editing and compiling Robert H. Jackson's draft manuscript and notes and then fleshing it out with complementary material from Jackson's other writings and interviews. He also included biographical sketches and notes that were helpful.
4073 That Man An Insider's Portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, by Robert H. Jackson Edited and Introduced by John Q. Barrett (read 17 Sep 2005) This was written by Jackson--attorney-general and Supreme Court justice--and not published till 2003. It tells in 8 frank chapters about Jackson's times with FDR, and he evaluates him as politician, lawyer, commander-in-chief, administrator, economist, companion and sportsman, and Leader. Though admiratory of Roosevelt it does not give him high marks show more in some of those roles. I found the book fun to read because it deals with behind the scenes events concerning a period I lived through and know well. The book also has a good bibliographical essay on Roosevelt and the writings by people of his adminstration. This was a good and easy book to read and a good behind the scenes account of interesting times. show less
