This is a lovely bit of old fashioned writing that at times is dated by its language which didn’t put me off and shouldn’t really offend anyone. Sandy is the ten year old son of the Pipe Major of The Black Watch. He’s not a delinquent, he just has that knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and some would say mischief is his middle name! Luckily for him, the Colonel up at the big house was exactly the same when he was a lad and with a quiet understanding takes Sandy under show more his wing. What I enjoyed most was watching the relationship develop between Sandy and the Colonel. It would be wonderful if every misjudged child could have a guiding colonel in their life. Set in 1950s Scotland the ending gets quite exciting as Sandy witnesses the advance landing of an invading force and in spite of being injured he manages to get word down to the Colonel and The Black Watch. Because of him the invasion is halted and for the first time in his life he is looked on as a hero - well done Sandy! show less
