This is a very intelligent and (IMHO) well-balanced book covering the subject of UFOs. Thompson objectively reports famous and well-documented UFO encounters and at the same time discusses the power of myth on a culture. We moderns think of ourselves as haven grown out of myth and into science, but this book very convincingly shows that modern UFO accounts are simply the current incarnation of ages old myths. Not to say that UFOs aren't "real"...well, it's complicated, but Thompson ends up show more with some speculative theories of his own.

"What does it mean to be a man, to live with a deep awareness of a masculine sense of self? This question lies at the root of the 89 essays that compose this book. Together they make up a lively exploration of the confusing roles and contradictory feelings that many men experience today. The question also fuels the men's movement and the hundreds of workshops that are drawing men to to examine their identities and their purpose." from book cover

To Be a Man can serve as the bible for the new male by exploring such issues as suppressed wildness, grief, and shame, as well as perennial topics such as competition, work, fatherhood, and loving relationaships. The audience for this New Consciousnesss reader also includes women who seek to understand their husbands and sons. Source: Publisher
