- Gladys Mary Wilson, née Baldwin, was born in Diss in Norfolk, England, the daughter of a Congregationalist minister. She attended boarding school at Milton Mount College near Crawley and a secretarial course in Cumbria. She worked as a shorthand typist at Lever Brothers in Port Sunlight before marrying Harold Wilson in 1940. The couple had two sons. In 1970, she published her first volume of poetry, Selected Poems, and New Poems appeared in 1979. Harold Wilson served as the British Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 and again from 1974 to 1976. She became Lady Wilson when her husband was knighted in 1976, and Baroness Wilson of Rievaulx when he was given a peerage in 1983.
