John Kennedy was born in Belfast in 1952 the third of a family of eight. A graduate of Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was head of classical subjects at a Grammar School in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, where he taught since 1976. Being a native of West Belfast, and having keen interest in Football, he was inevitably brought up on stories of the legendary Belfast Celtic teams of the past. When the bulldozers moved in to flatten Celtic Park in 1983 to make way for a shopping complex, he decided to write a history of the club from the beginning.
