This is a lovely book with many beautiful photographs of the Connecticut River, in all of its magnificence. To gather his images, professional photographer Robert Benson traveled the entire length of the Connecticut River, from its headwaters in northern New Hampshire (just south of the Canadian border) 410 miles southward to the Long Island Sound. Thus, with his photographs, he traces the river where it winds between Vermont and New Hampshire, flows south through Massachusetts, and then show more south through Connecticut, past Windsor Locks, through Hartford, and down to the river mouth at Essex.

Benson's photographs are magnificent. Most are river vistas, and many are aerial shots. Some show people fishing sailing, and in recreation. Most of the photos take up a full page, and some are presented in a two page spread. The photograph quality is excellent, and despite the early date (1989), the photos are crisp, with excellent color reproduction. I showed the book to a professional photographer of my acquaintance, and she was very impressed with them as well. A 6 page essay by Ben Bachman introduces the book, by sketching the history and geography of the river and its surroundings. I highly recommend this wonderful book.
