We loved this series, and watched one or two episodes almost every week for eight months, feeling a sense of loss at the end despite an entirely satisfactory concluding episode that tied up a lot of loose ends.
Wonderful acting, impeccable attention to detail in the construction of late 19th century sets, as well as the costumes and local feasts, and a thought-provoking, often poignant (and sometimes light-hearted) drama loosely based on a book of the same name.
I would give this six stars if show more I could! Very highly recommended if you like period drama that's character-based.

This is a generally good series about a woman doctor struggling to make her way in late Victorian society, facing sexism from both men and women, and the rigours of life in the East End of London. There are strong and committed performances from the leads and the period setting is well done. It is a pity that the final Series 4 (consisting only of two double length episodes) is rather strange and melodramtic, as well as being without several major characters. But still worth watching all the show more way through and good value if you can find it at a sensible price. show less
