If you need this book, say you have a new foster dog or a rescue dog coming into your home, it is a fantastic quick guide to everything you will need to do or need to know to get your dog settled in. I've been a volunteer dog trainer for eight years, so I knew most of what McConnel/London talked about. However, I have never fostered a dog before. Now I have my first foster dog. To a casual eye he seems well adjusted and friendly, but if you know what you're looking at you see he's freaked show more out and cuddly when it's safer to be submissive. He's barking and growling to any threat that is slightly more removed. This book helped me understand what is in my own house, and it's helping me have the patience to deal with it. show less
Nice little booklet! Good concise info on using play when training. The only fault is that it is too short. Wish the author had spent more time thinking of a whole lot more games. Love the friendly writing style and footnotes.
I like dog books, including dog training books. And I like psychology books. So I think I liked this book. I think I think I liked it, instead of know I liked it, as it was stuck between both worlds for me. The dog training examples were strong and good, but the human examples, like her using the principles to help guide her children, were not as strong for me.

If I wanted to use the dog training information out of the book to use, I don't think it was organized well enough that it could show more easily accessed. An index on that would have helped. So I enjoyed the book well enough reading through it in one pass, but would have preferred just reading a dog training book from her by itself with a good organization that would easily allow me to go to what I wanted to work on. show less
