A useful, albeit folksy, discussion on when to pursue an mfa, where to pursue an mfa, how to get into an mfa program, what to do once you're there and what to do once you've left. I found it be very general, and only somewhat useful since I had already been accepted into an mfa program when I started reading. Also, the book takes a very general approach, focusing primarily on US fiction-writing programs (no children's writing or non-fiction, for example).

However, the advice is useful, show more honest, and clearly written by someone who loves writing. I found it a helpful introduction to the mfa field. show less
Great book with the low-down on the MFA scene. So good it convinced me NOT to get my MFA...saved me a lot of money and time.
