This graphic novel is good enough to actually be an episode of the series, unlike the last one I read. The dialogue, character beats and themes were all pretty spot on. Nice.
Yay!

Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems #1 - Josceline Fenton, Chrystin Garland
My sister got me into this and I snagged a whole bunch of the comics on sale. They're fun, they're cute, they're heartwarming. And I've been so depressed I can barely do anything today.

That being said, I loved the setup: Steven takes the Gems camping and they tell scary stories. Except the story that Pearl tells - the one she and Garnet came up with to scary Amethyst into behaving when show more she was much, much younger - is too effective. Steven freaks out more than Amethyst ever did.

Still, it's lovely to see all these characters again. They get irritated with each other at times, but at the core of this show - and these comics - is the deep, deep love they all feel for each other. Love, love, love this so much!

Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems #4 - Josceline Fenton, Chrystin Garland
Neither Steven, nor the Gems, are afraid of fighting for themselves or the good of others, or life in general, this issue proves once again that fighting isn't their first choice. Nor does it always win the day: compassion, understanding, and love save everyone. As Steven starts to understand the motivation of the 'Glass Ghost' he begins to understand how he can help not only show more his friends, but the Ghost itself as well.

It was so lovely and kind that I kind of teared up a little.

And to think I was wary of this show at first. I'd watched Adventure Time and found it mindless in a way that grated on my nerves. I assumed Steven Universe was like that, but my sister told me no, that it was great. I gave it a try and ended up loving it, and snapping up these comics on sale. So glad I did now!

Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems #3 - Josceline Fenton, Chrystin Garland
I wish I could give it more stars. It's beautiful. All love and hope and warmth.

The Glass Ghost makes its way into Beach City and it's turning everyone - and everything - into glass. When Steven fears for his father's life, he runs to help Greg. The Gems follow the Ghost, trusting Steven to fend for himself.

As much as they point out that Greg is a mess - and he is show more - Greg also cares deeply for his son. I suspect they also trust Greg to play the mother bear when it comes to Steven being in danger.

Regardless, it's nice to see Steven and Greg's concern for each other. As my sister pointed out, he may not be able to take care of Steven on his own, but Greg is still in Steven's life. Just because he doesn't have his shit together completely, it doesn't mean that Greg is a horrible dad or doesn't love Steven. And it's nice to see him in Steven's life, giving him advice, just hanging out with Steven. There's a caring, loving relationship there, and Steven appreciates how much his father cares and looks out for him, too.

This is like having more of the series and I love it!
