Kingdom of the Franks: North West Europe Before Charlemagne (Library of Mediaeval Civilization) by Peter Lasko
Lots of great illustrations of Merovingian art and architecture. The caveat for this book is that it is not really of book about the politics, culture, economy or society of the Franks, but civilisation narrowly conceived as art and architecture. Anyone seeking a general history of the Franks pre-800 should look elsewhere. The perspective on art and architecture is related to issues of stylistic development and connoisseurship, rather than situating those artifacts in their social, economic show more or cultural context. This is, of course, a product of the late 1960s and will not satisfy the student of the new century. show less
