Gospel Order, and the search for it, has shaped the Quaker experiences since George Fox. In this series of essays, Lloyd Lee Wilson explores the concept of Gospel Order as understood by early Quakers and contemporary Conservative Friends. Each essay addresses a facet of the faith and practice of Friends, articulating the ways in which Friends vision of Gospel Order has shaped their beliefs as well as their outward lives. This season Friends and readers new to Quakers will find these essays show more helpful to their understanding of this "peculiar people." show less
An extraordinary book. I had hoped it would go on forever. So much to learn and think about. I immediately went out and bought a copy for my sister, not knowing if it would be her cup of tea. I've heard back and she is loving it, too. There is a book group in San Francisco discussing it. I wish I could attend more often. This is so rich it begs to be shared.
Wrestling with Our Faith Tradition chronicles the vocal ministry offered by Lloyd Lee Wilson at Friendly gatherings and yearly meetings over a ten-year period. Many invitations to travel among Friends followed from the publication of his book, Essays on the Quaker Vision of Gospel Order, first printed in 1993. You may have had the privilege of hearing one of these messages delivered in person. Now we all have the good fortune of reading the wise words of Wilson, a recorded minister in the show more Quaker tradition. His journey offers us a growing understanding based in faithfulness and an invitation for all of us to deepen our experience of the Divine. Some of the themes explored are how to make room in one's life for God, living in a community of faith and the Biblical basis for the peace testimony. LLoyd Lee Wilson asks and helps answer the question: How can Friends engage the faith tradition of classic Quakerism so that it is both relevant to our present circumstances and true to its historic roots? show less
"Pendle Hill sponsored a series of lectures entitled, 'Who Do You Say I Am?' Friends from across the spectrum of Quakerism were invited to speak about who Jesus is for them and how that affects their lives" (paraphrased from the pamphlet).

Wilson's pamphlet is easy reading. He takes the reader with him through his own particular logic of why he is a follower of Jesus, or more succintly, a Christian Quaker. Wilson looks at the theological issues of atonement, of Christ's divinity and the show more doctrine of the Trinity. He ultimately comes to the realization that this large question begs another: who are WE? If we claim to understand who Jesus is, and claim to follow him, then who must we say we are? And do we live into the life we claim? Lloyd Lee probably does better than most. show less
