Based in part on responses to questionnaires sent to "all State Garden Club Conservation chairmen" across the United States, the two authors present concrete solutions to the drought problem for gardeners. The authors met at Cornell where both served on the faculty. They married in 1923 and have collaborated on many horticultural books and magazines.
The starts with "design" solutions, moves to how to improve moisture-retaining soils (mulching), and how water itself can be used more show more effectively. [This is written before drip systems became widespread.] All kinds of gardens are presented, often with black-and-white photographs.
The second half of the book lists nearly 500 draught-resistant plants alphabetically by type: Trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, annuals, and desert flora are described and many are pictured. show less
