In the twentieth century, American music educators have been exposed to many
tools and methods in order to teach music. Most teachers have been exposed to the
methods of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, Carl Orff, Zoltiin Kodiily, and Edwin E. Gordon ..
Each method teaches music from a different perspective, but they do share one thing in
common. They all emphasize the importance of teaching in a logical and sequential
manner. These different philosophies of music education all understand that we show more must
generate new knowledge from what the student already knows without leaving gaps in
their musical development.
Teachers are always looking for better ways to instruct students. Many teachers
follow one instructional method, while others take a more eclectic approach. Through an
analysis of all of these methods it is apparent that it is not the content of the instruction, as
much as the sequence of instruction that insures success. All of these methods have an
excellent sequence of instruction. Through analysis of their sequences, I will show how
they can be used as stand alone methods, or combined in a sequence that insures success. show less
