I enjoyed reading this book, which takes a relaxed, but serious view of marathon training. Joe Henderson encourages rest days, crosstraining, and walk breaks as needed during training runs and marathons. He also warns that a runner cannot show up at a distance race unprepared; training is an INVESTMENT in Marathon Race Day.

This book is broken into 100 "Day" segments, with a different (though often similar) article for each day, and a training log as well. Articles run the spectrum from show more training, to race day, to recovery. A list of marathons is found in the back of the book.

All in all, this was a good read as I prepare for my marathon.

Joe Henderson subtitles his book, 'Lessons for Beginners on All Levels,' The 'all levels' feature is unique among books for beginners, because Henderson recognizes that everyone doesn't begin at the same place of with the same goals:

Jog, Run, Race tells you how to find your own starting point and then how to move upward from there. It deals with many types of new beginnings:

1) Regaining fitness through programs of jogging or walking leading to jogging.
2) Advancing from jogging to 'fun show more running.'
3) Stepping up to long or fast racing.

The book leads beginners twhrough 33 valuable lessons covering the sport's theory and practice. Included are 15 month long training schedules, each designed to help the new jogger, runner or racer write his or her own success story.

Joe Henderson is the editor of Runner's Wrold Magazine.
