Young-do Lee

The Heart of the Nhaga is a South Korean epic fantasy that’s been translated into English for the first time and I’m so glad to have gotten the chance to read it. The story has multiple povs and follows a band of not-quite heroes as well a young Nhaga man who is terrified of the ceremony to become an adult in his culture and two Nhaga women who have their own interest in the situation

The nhaga’s culture was very interesting, with heart extraction leading to near immortality and living show more in a deep dense forest they’ve spread over half the world. I do hope in further books we get to see more of the Rekon and Tokkebi culture as well. I also loved how dragons develop in this world and hope we see more of that too.

The style and narrative are both a bit different than books written for an American audience and I really enjoyed this. There is a lot of humor and while we don’t see deeply into individual characters I liked traveling with them.

Also a lot of small, would-be kings got beat up by our heroes which was immensely satisfying.

The only downside is that it ends on a cliffhanger with no resolutions, which I can’t stand when books do. Still, four out of five stars, I definitely recommend this one. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for access to the eARC in exchange for an honest review show less

Ho incrociato L’uccello che beve lacrime per caso, mentre spulciavo le nuove uscite sul blog di Troppacaffeina: ho letto di questo nuovo fantasy e ho pensato che mi andava proprio di visitare un mondo fantastico. Quindi l’ho letto totalmente ignara di tutto – a malapena avevo letto la sinossi – e devo dire che non è andata troppo male.

In linea di massima il romanzo mi è piaciuto: ho trovato interessante che, a parte gli esseri umani, si parlasse di creature che non avevo mai show more sentito nominare, con punti di forza e debolezza diversi da quelli soliti dei soliti elfi e nani. Inoltre, mi ha lasciato una gran voglia di sapere cosa succederà ai vari personaggi, ai quali è facile affezionarsi, e la risposta alle domande, più o meno espresse, che L’uccello che beve lacrime lascia aperte: si tratta, infatti, del primo volume di una serie che proseguirà con L’ambizione dei rekon.

Tuttavia ho delle perplessità con il modo in cui il romanzo è stato scritto. Innanzi tutto, è molto difficile visualizzare le ambientazioni: Lee ci dice che c’è una città, c’è una torre, ci sono delle rovine e c’è una foresta, ma senza dettagliare abbastanza perché nella testa dellə lettorə si formi qualcosa di più specifico di una vaga idea. Un vero peccato perché questa vaghezza non dà carattere alla storia, che così potrebbe essere ambientata in qualunque universo fantasy medievaleggiante.

Un altro elemento di perplessità per me è stato lo stile. Sembra che Lee ogni tanto non sappia cosa fare della sua storia: quindi finisce per tagliare corto, per mescolare registri diversi e per farci finire in delle situazioni così inaspettate da dare l’impressione di aver saltato dei capitoli. È stata una lettura molto disorientante da questo punto di vista, perché sembra un romanzo scritto di getto e mai riletto prima della pubblicazione: sarebbe solo bastato un po’ di buon editing per avere un libro di gran lunga migliore. show less

Keigan is een van de weinigen die regelmatig het Nhaga-territorium weet binnen te dringen, en er ook weer levend uitkomt. Maar zelfs voor hem is dit een uitdaging… Zeker als blijkt dat diegene die hij moet redden een van de door hem zo gehate Nhagas is.

Wat volgt is een episch avontuur zoals je dat nog nooit hebt gelezen. Een wereld vol unieke wezens gebaseerd op Koreaanse mythologie. show less
