Laurie is a well known writer of NeoPagan, specifically Celtic Reconstructionist, essays and reflections, and is very good at what she does. (See my review of [Ogam: Weaving Word Wisdom].)
[Fireflies at Absolute Zero] is a first poetry collection, and although it is uneven in places, there is plenty of wonderful stuff in here which keeps me moving forward with the book. She tackles a couple of broad topics, including her connection to nature and growing up as a Navy brat in backwoods USA, but show more a majority of the poems evoke deities from a number of ancient religions. There is a sense of incantation to many, and taut, often beautiful imagery. We see the deities not as flat assemblages of "aspects" but as fierce, multi-dimensional beings whose very nature determines our experience of life on this earth.
Here is hoping there will be much more from Laurie over the coming years. show less

One of, if not the best book on the market about the Ogam. Very simple methodical approach to the subject and loaded with information. I was impressed with the easy reading style and layout of the book. It was recommended to me after I had read some other works and asked a few questions about the Ogam itself. Finding this book was a treasure and I have followed the suggestions that Laurie makes to achieve greater knowledge and success with the Ogam as a divination tool.
Skimmed most of it as, at this point, it is more of a reference book than something to consume whole. I appreciate the author's commitment to scholarship.
Brilliant. Scholarly, honest, human, and accessible. What more could I want?
