Incorporating Drumming Circles and African Folktale Literature Into the Music Classroom by Elizabeth Ellis
Introduction
The joy of drumming and the importance of using drumming in the music classroom
took root for me personally in the summer of 2002 when I completed a World Music
Drumming class. While this class was the inspiration for my master’s project, other
things that I have learned in my 14-year teaching career factor into this project as well.
The majority of this project is a series of lesson plans that incorporate drumming and
African folktales. Before creating the lessons in this document, show more I took some time to
research and reflect on the importance of multicultural music, the validity of drumming
and drumming circles, and the use of children’s literature in the music classroom. show less
