- The backpacking bug hit Kathy Morey hard in the 1970s and hasn't let go yet. In 1990 she abandoned an aerospace career to write for Wilderness Press. She is the author of hiking guides for four Hawaiian islands, the Sierra Nevada, and others.

This book was very useful for our family when we lived on Oahu. We used it a couple times a month when we took the kids out to explore the island. It describes in fairly good detail the location, difficulty, length, and facilities provided of trails all over the island. It does have a visitor-tourist focus, but we still found it useful. It also provides a lot of interesting background on the island of Oahu.
