Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda follows a daughter returning to her dysfunctional family after the death of her father. It is an exceptional, very highly recommended psychological family drama/murder mystery. Daughter of Mine is another excellent, un-put-downable thriller by Megan Miranda.
After leaving a decade earlier, Hazel Sharp returns home to the small town of Mirror Lake, North Carolina, for her father, longtime police officer Detective Perry Holt's, memorial. As the family, her show more brothers, Caden and Gage and her Uncle Roy, hold the memorial, across the lake a car is being pulled out of the water. A long running drought has lowered the water level at the lake, leading to the discovery of a submerged car. The mystery of the car disturbs Hazel, as her mother disappeared years ago. Even so, after the memorial Hazel was planning to return to Charlotte where she has a building-renovation business, but then she learns she has inherited the house and her brothers have planned to go through it, so she quickly returns. That's when another vehicle is found submerged in the water behind the house.
The tension is high and suspicions are rampant in the atmospheric mystery Daughter of Mine, perhaps Miranda's best novel to date - which is saying a lot. There are several mysteries occurring in the plot. New mysteries include the disappearance of Caden's wife, Jamie, why Hazel inherited the house, and odd occurrences happening in the house. Old mysteries involve the disappearance of Hazel's mom, the two cars pulled from the lake and the clues people seem to be giving Hazel without actually saying anything. The small town, where people have been around for generations and know everything about you and your family plays a major role in the narrative. The ongoing drought is also a noteworthy part of the novel and each chapter opens with how many days it has been since it rained.
Hazel is a fully realized character and immediately a sympathetic one. You will know her mother left her with just a simple note and that Perry Holt cared for her like a father. The sibling rivalry between Hazel and Caden is evident and Gage, as the older brother, also has a preset role in the family dynamics. There are doubts and uncertainty about the strange things happening and Hazel is unsure who can be trusted to help her or give her honest answers.
The writing is extraordinary. The scenes are all perfectly described and place you firmly in the scene. The tension and family dynamics work together to create a heightened sense of caution and even alarm. Secrets abound and I had all sorts of guesses and suppositions about what was happening along the way, but my guesses weren't even close. The final denouement is phenomenal. Thanks to Simon Element for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

Warning: Don’t read The Last to Vanish when you have a lot you have to do — because you won’t do it. I finished this page-turner in two days, neglecting so many, many chores!
Abby Lovett didn’t grow up in tiny, insular Cutter’s Pass, N.C., but having worked for her Aunt Celeste Farley for nearly 10 years at the Passage Inn, she’s finally become considered an insider. But arrival of a man looking for his missing brother makes Abby realize that the residents of Cutter’s Pass show more aren’t what they seem.
What a wonderful, twisty thriller! I can’t wait to read my next Megan Miranda suspense-filled novel. show less

It’ a creepy, compelling story of a life forever warped and twisted by unwanted fame. It poses a well-known, and often repeated theme, in this era of internet celebrities and their fall from grace that often follows. A shivery kind of fun creeps upon the reader as we wonder along with Olivia whether those close to her should be trusted or feared., I often wanted to urge her on as she races to unravel the past without unraveling her fragile sanity. I found it to be an above-average show more psychological thriller/mystery that keeps the suspense ratcheted up through most of the book. It’s wasn’t an easy solve since each passing chapter seemed to create more questions than it gave answers. Still very 4.5 star worthy. show less
This probably would have been a 4 or 4.5 for me, however the way it was written brought it up to a full 5. Imagine this….you are reading along, meeting the main character, having the stage set, and suddenly you jump ahead to “Day 15”. Not a big deal, although you do feel like you’ve missed out on a lot of storyline (obviously). At the end of that day the chapter ends with a cliffhanger…..do you get to turn the page to go to Day 16 to see what happens? No. Do you go back to “Day show more 1” to carry on from your initial reading? No. You go back to the morning of Day 14! You are left hanging with the unknown. Each day you go backwards, you get insight into the chapter you just finished reading. And since it’s a mystery, you are pretty much changing your mind as to what happened and/or who is responsible just about each day. It is an absolutely brilliant twist on the standard writing style with flashbacks. Oh, and did I fail to mention that during the 2 weeks this story takes place there are flashbacks to 10 years ago as well? Yep, it has that too. But don’t worry, it is written well enough that you can follow along in reverse. Knowing that was how it was written, I was actually nervous that I might get too confused but that was not the case.
This is the story of a young lady named Nic who receives a call from her brother telling her she needs to come back to their home town of Cooley Ridge, NC to help sell their father’s house. She has spent the last 10 years trying to stay away from Cooley Ridge as much as she could so this is a request she would prefer not to accept, but she packs up and goes anyway. When she left a decade ago, her best friend had just gone missing and hasn’t been heard from since. Another girl from this small town goes missing shortly after Nic arrives home, bringing up the past investigation all over again. Are the cases related or just a coincidence? What happened to each of these missing girls are the mysteries that will unravel during the 2 weeks she is home. I highly recommend that you read it to find out for yourself.
A HUGE thank you to Net Galley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me to read an advanced copy in return for an honest review. I can’t wait for the book to come out next month so that others can enjoy it and let me know how they like it. show less
