Gowen, from the Reading Railroad, investigated and prosecuted the Molly Maguires, who were apparently "false-flag" Irish-American terrorist coal miners. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a case before the Interstate Commerce Commission on behalf of a private client against the Standard Oil trust. In the course of these hearings, Gowen cross-examined John D. Rockefeller. Gowen died of a gunshot wound to the head on Dec. 13, 1889.
