This was a unique take on the Neanderthal clone genre that has been done a few times. I really like it. I was not quite sure what to make of this when I started the book, but the story unfolds along rather nicely with a good progression of events. There ARE some unanswered questions, like how the heck the Neanderthal got to Greenland in the first place, I really would have liked to know that. Also, I was not quite sure how to feel about Ike being so brilliant. I've read Clan of the Cave show more Bear, and while I don't claim to believe that Jean M Auel knows exactly what a Neanderthal's processing capability is (A Neanderthal's inherited memories as opposed to a Cro-Magnon's ability to learn new things) but this is Mr. Novy's story, and he is free to do as he pleases, and I must admit, this was a nice and unique take on a Neanderthal in our world.

I liked reading about Ike's struggle with who he is and wanting to be seen as a person, not a science experiment. I did find the ending to be a bit cliched, but I still enjoyed the story overall!

Having already read another book by this author, 'Neanderthal Swan Song', I was eager to read this one since I had enjoyed the first one. I was not disappointed.

Reading the other book is not required to understand this one, but there are a few nods to aforesaid book that readers of that book will catch. I enjoyed the storyline, it was well-written and believable. There were a few parts of the book that left me eager to find out what would happen next.

I wish this book had been just a bit show more thicker, with some more tidbits of information on the two alien races introduced in here. Also perhaps a couple of scenes set on Earth, so that we get an idea of what it is like back home at that time. One thing I noticed was that we do not get a really complete idea of what the Thrace look like until closer to the end, but I think this may have been intentional. There is much unsaid in this book (not in a bad way) and I would definitely be up to reading another book set in this universe if the author decides to write any more. show less
