On the one hand, the art is gorgeous and the messages are good -- Valerie finds a way to change, to fight for herself. On the other hand -- it's hard to accept that her mother could be so toxic to her and when she reaches out for help the response is "she loves you in her own way". It's a troubling book, tackling so much -- grief, jealousy, body image, purging. And I wonder -- where was her father when her mother abused her? Where was her brother in this conversation? It's powerful. And sad. show more And ultimately hopeful -- I love that Jordan at least has a strong sense of self. show less
In places difficult to digest (hah), this comic masterfully captures the experiences and struggles that come with disordered eating. It addresses far more than that, though. One of the strongest lessons within, for me, was “how to accept love that comes in forms you cannot change, and how to not let it hurt you”. Many thanks to the author for this book.
Trigger Warnings: Disorder eating (bulimia), fatphobia, body-shaming, depictions of vomiting, purging, loss of parent, grief, verbally abusive parent
Hungry Ghost follows Valerie Chu while she deals with disordered eating in her senior year of high school when tragedy strikes her family.
I’m in love with the color palette of this entire novel - which, along with muted pastels and adorable, expressive lines makes the story all the more heartbreaking when it’s about a young woman struggling show more with her relationship with food and with her mother.
It was also interesting to me to be able to see the dynamics of a culture where there’s always good food, and also over-emphasize women being thin.
This is a painful read. The author did an amazing job at both showing and describing the struggles that Val is going through with her illness. People will feel seen after reading this. And those who aren’t dealing with the same struggles, will hopefully be able to have a deeper understanding after finishing this book.
I’ll be recommending this book for sure, but it will come with the Trigger Warnings attached. Take care of yourself. show less

Diana is a princess on Themyscira, the hidden paradisiacal island nation exclusively inhabited by immortal women. Being a princess or being destined for a career in superheroics weren’t the only things that made young Diana unique there, though. She was also the only kid. The result of a miraculous birth, she was created when the Queen of the Amazons so longed for a child that she formed one out of clay and prayed to her patron deities that they bring it to life.
Now Diana is an adolescent, show more and is therefore feeling more alone than usual. At the in between stage,
“It seems like I’m either too old or too young for everything,” Diana thinks.
An idea strikes. If mama could make a child out of clay, why can’t I make a friend? So, she creates Mona out of left over clay and sand.
Very soon we notice that Mona is not a good influence on Diana.
What starts as child-like mischief and innocent secret-keeping becomes pranks, lying and, by the adventure’s climax, a threat to all of Themyscira, if not the world itself. Desperate to prove that she’s a “real” Amazon, despite the peculiarity of her origins, Diana tests herself by opening the door to Tartarus, an underworld where the souls of defeated monsters dwell, guarded over by the Amazons. Only a true Amazon is able to unlock the gate. show less
