Gordon's books are wonderful to look at, funny, quirky, and consistently creative. In this day when so many people are publishing children's books that should never see the light of day, Gordon is a true star. I love all his books, and I'm much older than 6! These are the kinds of books you won't mind reading to your kids over and over. They have a visual style that really sets them apart. Although there aren't a lot of words, don't page through so quickly you miss the subtle humor in the show more illustrations. Highly, highly recommended. show less
These four alphabet books will delight small children. However, taken as a whole in this 4-in-1 set, they are a bit repetitive and not up to the imaginative cleverness of most of Gordon's other work.
My Crazy Pet Frog by Scott Gordon
The lead of this story looks so... weird. Weird yet interesting all at the same time! I'm not quite sure what to think of it. Even when he starts doing different activities, it's like he is staring into my soul. That uncanny valley feeling is amped up a bit in this book. And... a rubber ducky normally looks like a duck and not like an inflatable you wear around your waist.
But hey, it turns out the uncanny frog is a secret agent. That's cool... right?! And he show more dances like he's a fan of the Bee Gees!
The end of this book is what really gets me... he has a family who'd like him to come home and just hang out instead of being all of these crazy careers. It felt slightly depressing, yet kids wouldn't see that. Only the parents.
It was one of the shorter books, but it was one of the weirder books. I think it's cool but... odd. Let's go with odd. It honestly felt like the author was picking up story ideas from a hat and mashed them all together.

Gordon's books are cleverly illustrated and amusingly written, I especially appreciate that he doesn't talk down to his intended audience--using words such as impervious, for instance. That makes his books great for parent and kids to read together. This one tells the story of a boy dreaming he is a robot and of all the possibilities--before being brought back down to earth. The tone here if more reflectful and not as silly as his other books, but still very much recommended.
