This book starts with a heartbreaking scene which I think for me is the first time you see how beaten down and broken a child can become after being in the program. Spark is dumped on the side of the road but some how manages to find salvation in a couple who take her in, the wife hesitantly but husband fully embracing her presents. We see how she settles into life while trying to keep control of the beast and not lash out at her parents unintentionally while they try to help her with her show more past and her mother fight for those who did this to be accountable. But good golly the twists that start to appear out of no where will blind side you, your heart will ache for Spark and you will want her to keep fighting for herself. Oh and yeah the ending ... wow! show less

What it really is, is a Disaster!
The writing is horribly disjointed. Jumbled and chaotic thoughts show more thrown together that make absolutely no sense.
I am so disappointed. I actually thought I might have somehow gotten a bad copy. So I went through a lot of the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon to see what the lower star reviews said. I came to the conclusion I did not have a bad copy. The book is just that badly written.
I wish I could reach out and slap every person who left 5 star reviews! Liars!! Shame on you!!
Errors of every kind is en mass in this book. From spelling to grammar to entire areas that needed to be edited out. Incohesive sentence structure on every page and virtually every paragraph. Repetitive thoughts from both H/h.
What sounded like a great idea for a great book turned into torture to read. The torture started on the first page and continued through to the last page.
There were areas that were interesting. But you are so bogged down in the disordered and spasmodic writing, you can not enjoy it.
Ms. Faulks, find a good editor and rewrite this book! You have a great idea and it is buried here!

This is a slow burn book and we get to see Mark aka Sixth during the years as he grows up becoming the man he is. This is a slow burn so you have to stick with it as it really does set the foundation of the story but I do hope we get to know each characters throughout the series. We see Sixth through the years as he deals with the nightmares of what he has been through and the salvation he finds while fate awaits him. We get glimpses of the others who are like him and meet them towards the show more end of the book and can't help but like them from the get go. I like how the story slowly reveals itself and we learn more of what they have been through and start to build a bigger picture of what happened to them all and why they are drawn together. I can not wait for the next book as I was totally hooked by then end!! show less
This review is about the story within called ASHES AND SMOKE: KNIGHTS OF ST. LAZARUS by Rebecca Royce, and Heather Long.

Such a great treat. My only quibble is it ended far too quick! I can only hope they plan on expanding this universe into a new series. Nika is a Phoenix. Nope she's not from Arizona, but flares into flames and rises from rebirth once more from those same fires. She and her love James, and fellow Knights were orphaned and now fight to help save people from demons. Things are show more suddenly changing as what they'd long believed dusty old prophecies, might be more than just the myths they'd thought. Who will come out victorious and what do these prophecies entail? Take a peek into this interesting universe and help with rebuilding from the horrible Australian Bush fires. These authors never disappoint, and when these two fierce women join forces magic happens! show less
