Hernando Téllez (1908–1966)

This short story would be an excellent addition to an ELA unit on suspense. You could also use the story to extend into Colombian history or morality. It's also a good writing example of a cliffhanger ending as the final lines certainly leads to more questions than answers. Furthermore, there's a really nicely done short film on youtube by Jeff Hamil that would be an excellent companion to reading the story. The filmmaker made, what I think are, some really smart adaptation decisions that show more could lead to a discussion of adapting literature to film. In sum, this short story is an exciting piece that could be taken in multiple directions. show less
