About the Author

Rannit published his first book of poems in 1937 and later added five more collections. Because he lived the last three decades of his life in the United States, he is perhaps the best-known Estonian poet in the English-speaking world. He defines poetry as a "dance of syllables . . . the show more consensually pulsating expression of our spirit . . . a kind of sorcery in which metaphorical thinking blends with authentic reality to create a mythical order."
