This included four engaging biographies about people you might have heard of but probably don't know very much about, which clearly illustrate compassion in their life's work. The four people profiled are Henri Landwirth, who created "Give Kids the World" to give terminally ill children a chance to see Disney World before they die; Rigoberta Menchu', who won the Nobel Peace prize for her work at peacefully helping the people of her native Guatemala; Craig Kielburger, who has fought for the show more rights of children everywhere with his organization "Free the Children", and Mother Teresa, who discovered that her calling was comforting those everyone else neglects. These biographies teach compassion without preaching. show less
For an adult this book is a quick read, with plenty of illustrations and info boxes. Denise Rinaldo does a good job of presenting the basic facts of Caesar's life, with some helpful short-term background information added in for context. Overall, it's a fine introduction for anyone seeking "just the facts" on one of history's big names, and is ideal for the middle-school or high school audience to whom it is geared.
These are four excellent mini-biographies about people who persist. They include Lance Armstrong, who kept biking despite battling cancer; Aung San Suu Kyi, who served as a leader for a cause, despite being forcibly housebound, and not being able to leave her country to see her dying husband; Jackie Robinson, who faced many challenges as the first African American to play on teams that formerly only allowed caucatians; and Eleanor Roosevelt, a first lady who fought for human rights. These show more people fought incredible odds to do what they believed was right. show less
