The aim of this book is to demonstrate that there isn’t one pathway into a career in public health and to show how varied the careers on offer are. It sets out the broad areas you could work such as academic public health, improving health, working with information (health intelligence) and health protection. It also sets out the roles within available within local authorities, the NHS, policy, the voluntary sector and international and global health. One of the book’s strengths is that show more it is mindful of the differences between the four UK countries and mentions any distinct issues. Although most of the focus is on the UK the book does include information on international and global public health. The public health functions are brought to life by accounts of professionals describing their experiences and their own career paths. The book ends with a concise, but helpful, chapter on taking your first steps into a public health career with a strong emphasis on making contact with professionals for information, advice and support. Overall, this is a great book for anyone considering public health as a career. show less
