The story for Vote Loki is fantastic. Loki runs for president and bamboozles the public into loving him; the parallels with the recent election are hard to miss. I was curious how it would end, and the conclusion was spot on and perfectly in character for the God of Mischief.
Unfortunately, while most of the cover art for the individual issues was great, I HATED the interior artwork. I understand that art is subjective, but this looked like it came out of a young child's coloring book. The show more proportions on characters were often wrong, and everything looked ugly. I almost didn't buy the book because of it - but the story was too good to pass up.
I hope Marvel does another Loki series, limited or ongoing, but with a different artist. Overall, recommended for the writing. show less

Volume 8 of the collected Adventure Time comics. This one starts with a single-issue story in which Lumpy Space Princess is interviewing suspects in an attempt to solve a mystery. This is Ryan North's last installment of the comic, which makes me kind of sad, but it's an absolutely delightful note to go out on.
The main, multi-part story is by Christopher Hastings, and features trips the moon and to the inside of Jake's stomach, a possessed sandwich, a food crisis caused by everyone suddenly show more forgetting how to cook, and a giant eldritch chef monster. Honestly, it's a big, weird, sometimes confusing mess of a story... but I quite enjoyed it, anyway.
Because this is the "mathematical edition," in addition to being a very nice hardback, it contains some brief behind-the-scenes commentary from both writers, providing a glimpse at where their ideas came from. show less

This ninth collection of Adventure Time comics, as usual, features a short one-shot story followed by a longer multi-part one. The one-shot features Magic Man, owlbears, some extremely fragile egg people, and a rather large breach in the fourth wall, while the longer story sees Finn and Jake going on a spy mission for Peppermint Butler. It's maybe not quite as good the stuff we got during Ryan North's time writing the comic, but it's certainly entertaining enough, and gave me at least a few show more chuckle-out-loud moments.
Rating: I'm going to give this a 4/5. Which might be generous, and I thought about rating it a bit lower, but, no, it deserves at least half a star extra for Peppermint Butler. I love Peppermint Butler. And am mildly terrified of him. show less

The fourth or fifth or sixth Quantum & Woody series (depending on how you count them) is collected here, and it is a jumbled mess that's barely even half a story.
Woody seems to be receiving visions of danger, so he and Quantum and their goat rush to save the day in their usual terribly incompetent manner. Along the way they meet a family of killers, get mentored by an older superhero mentor, get tracked by a potential sidekick, and discover new powers. None of it really comes together, gets show more concluded, or seems worth the bother.
Valiant keeps pushing Quantum & Woody books as Bonus Borrows on Hoopla, but it is past time I stop checking them out. And that really goes for the Valiant Universe in general. show less
