Anthony Shay is Associate Professor of Dance and Cultural Studies, Pomona College, USA. His book Choreographic Politics, a history of state folk dance ensembles, won the Outstanding Scholarly Dance Publication award in 2002 from the Congress on Research in Dance.

This study describes and analyzes the phenomenal popularity of exotic dance forms among mainstream Americans. Throughout the twentieth century and especially since 1950, millions of Americans have begun learning and performing various Balkan dances, the tango, and other Latin American dances, along with the classical dances of India, Japan, and Indonesia. Includes discussion of belly dance.
Provides both historical perspective and analysis of the folk troupe phenomenon that arose in world dance during the 1950's and 1960's. Includes significant amount of information about Reda Troupe which helps put the work of Reda Troupe into perspective within the larger context of world dance trends that were occurring at the time.
